The small 35 mm diameter is a low-profile size meant for rocky and rooty terrain, where a wide snow basket would only catch on stone; on soft ground or bog it sinks more than a bigger basket would. Buy this when the baskets on an existing pole are worn, cracked, or have fallen off. Check the basket-mount thread of your pole first, since not every trekking pole brand uses the same fitting.
