Description

The Sawyer Squeeze is one of the most widely used lightweight filters for backpacking and bikepacking, built around a hollow-fiber cartridge with 0.1-micron absolute filtration. It removes bacteria and protozoa (giardia, cryptosporidium) but isn't tested against viruses, which is fine for most backcountry sources — where viral contamination is a real risk, pair it with a chemical treatment. At 1.7 L/min, its flow rate is among the fastest in the squeeze-filter class, so filling a bottle typically takes well under a minute when the cartridge is clean. Water is pushed through by squeezing a soft pouch of untreated water, or it can run inline on a hydration bladder hose, useful on longer days when you'd rather not stop to filter. The 28 mm thread fits SmartWater-style bottles, widely available along popular trails, making replacement containers easy to find. Cleaning is done by backflushing with a syringe; the cartridge itself isn't replaceable, so keeping flow rate up over time depends on regular backflushing. It's a proven, well-balanced choice for solo hikers and small groups alike.
