The Big Agnes Blacktail 2 is a freestanding, double-wall dome tent built as a versatile three-season option for two backpackers. Aluminum poles and an inner-first pitch mean it goes up quickly even in dry weather, and being freestanding, the whole tent can be picked up and repositioned without pulling stakes.
A trail weight of 2040 g and full packaged weight of 2236 g put the Blacktail 2 in mid-weight three-season territory — not an ultralight single-pole pyramid, but a comfort-oriented compromise at roughly 1.1 kg per person. Fly and floor are recycled 75D polyester with a 1500 mm PU coating, enough for typical rain, and a 3.07 m² floor plus two vestibules totaling 1.67 m² leave decent room for gear.
A partial-mesh inner tent handles ventilation on warmer nights, reflective guylines make the tent easier to spot in the dark, and four interior pockets keep small items organized. A footprint is sold separately. Overall it's a solidly equipped choice for pairs on weekend or multi-day trips where living space matters more than shaving every gram.
