The Air Core Ultra is Big Agnes's entry-level air pad, using an I-beam internal construction and no insulation layer at all — it is rated 1.4 R-value under the ASTM F3340-18 standard, which places it firmly in the 1-season/summer category for warm-ground use only. At 510g for the 183x51cm regular size and 8.9cm of thickness, it is light for an air-only pad, though the TPU-laminated nylon ripstop top and bottom fabric produce a moderate amount of crinkle noise, according to its own listed noise rating. It packs to about 18x10cm and comes complete with an inflation (pump) sack, a stuff sack, and a repair kit, so no separate pump purchase is needed. Two multi-function valves handle both inflation and rapid deflation. It suits summer backpacking, warm-climate thru-hiking sections, or budget-minded campers who already own separate insulation, such as a closed-cell foam pad, and just need cushioning. It is not the right choice for shoulder-season or cold-ground camping, where the low R-value would leave you cold from below regardless of air temperature.
