The Hyperlite Mountain Gear 4400 Southwest is an ultralight pack with a 70 L main compartment that expands to 86 L total, making it one of the larger-volume options in the ultralight category. At 1100 g, that works out to roughly 12.8 g per liter carried — a reasonable trade given the pack retains removable aluminum stays and a padded back panel, features many lighter frameless packs skip entirely. The body is built from Dyneema Composite Hardline with a woven Dyneema face fabric, chosen for abrasion resistance and near-zero water absorption, useful on off-trail routes where the pack repeatedly brushes rock and brush. A roll-top closure, two side pockets, and a dual-density foam hip belt with zippered pockets are paired with load lifters and a chest strap to help manage heavier loads on rough terrain.
