The Mountainsmith Apex 80 scales up the Apex platform to 80 liters, with a 10-liter expandable front sleeve pushing total capacity to 90 liters — sized for heavy multi-day loads or short mountaineering approaches where the ice axe loops of smaller siblings are traded for extra pocket space instead. Four side pockets and two front pockets replace the ice axe attachment points seen on the Apex 60.
Built on aluminum stays with a contact-padded back panel and 210D Robic Dynajin nylon ripstop fabric, the pack carries weight via a shaped hip belt, chest strap, and load lifters. Access is through the top lid or a U-shaped front zip. It is hydration-compatible but ships without an integrated rain cover.
At 2220 grams and about 24.7 grams per liter, it is lighter per liter than the Apex 60 despite the larger volume, reflecting a pack built for carrying heavy multi-day loads rather than fast-and-light travel.
