Description

The VAR 2 is a Czech-made upright canister stove that has been produced in Jablonec nad Nisou since 1994, giving it a long production history in a market segment where many designs come and go within a few seasons. It screws directly onto standard EN 417 threaded gas canisters, weighs 110 g, and delivers a claimed 2800 W output, bringing a liter of water to a boil in about 4.5 minutes under test conditions. Fuel consumption is rated at roughly 150 g/h, and the burner includes simmer control for cooking rather than just boiling water, which broadens its use beyond quick freeze-dried meals. Wind resistance is rated poor without protection, and a windscreen is sold separately rather than included — an upright canister-top design is inherently more exposed to wind than a remote or integrated system, so pairing it with a windscreen is worth planning for. It's not pressure-regulated and has no piezo ignition, keeping the mechanism simple and, per the manufacturer, repairable, backed by a 2-year warranty. That combination of long domestic manufacturing history, simple mechanics, and repairability makes the VAR 2 a practical choice for backpacking, climbing, and expedition use where field-serviceable gear matters more than the latest integrated features.
