Exped SIM 2.5

The Exped SIM 2.5 is a self-inflating mat, a construction that predates today's dedicated air pads: an open-cell foam core bonded to airtight fabric expands on its own once the valve is opened, drawing in air without a separate pump. That trades weight for simplicity - at 690 g and 2.5 cm thick, it's heavier than an air pad with a comparable R-value of 3.3 (ASTM), but there's no pump sack in the box since none is needed, unlike Exped's Dura air pads. The 75D brushed recycled polyester top fabric adds a soft feel against a sleeping bag, while the honeycomb-embossed TPU laminate underneath resists ground abrasion. Self-inflating mats are also comparatively quiet and forgiving of minor punctures, since the foam core still insulates even with a small leak, unlike a pure air pad that goes flat. At 26 x 16 cm packed, it's not as compact as Exped's lightest air pads. For hikers who value low-maintenance reliability over shaving every gram, the SIM 2.5 is a dependable, no-pump option with a stuff sack and repair kit included.
