The LifeStraw Peak Series Activated Carbon Filter Add-on is a supplementary cartridge for Peak Series squeeze and gravity filters, not a standalone purifier. It combines activated carbon with an ion-exchange resin to remove contaminants a hollow-fibre membrane can't catch: heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium III and copper, plus chlorine taste, odours and pesticide residue. It screws in between the main membrane filter and the mouthpiece, so the microfilter upstream still handles bacteria and protozoa - this add-on itself isn't tested against bacteria, protozoa or viruses and shouldn't be relied on alone.
At 36 g it barely registers on a scale, but its 100-litre lifespan is far shorter than the membrane's 2,000 litres, so it becomes the part you replace most often. Worth adding where source water has an off taste, smell, or known heavy-metal or pesticide contamination - not something every hiker needs, but a useful upgrade for questionable water sources.
