The Exped Ultra 1R is a pure air pad — not self-inflating — built for summer use with no synthetic or foam insulation. Its ASTM R-value of 1.8 makes it a clearly single-season pad, fine for warm summer nights but not for cooler spring or autumn conditions, let alone winter.
The top fabric is recycled 20D ripstop polyester with a TPU laminate, bluesign certification, and no PFCs. The construction uses vertical baffles, and 7 cm of thickness gives decent ground clearance despite the low weight. In size M it weighs just 380 g and packs to 23 × 9.5 cm — smaller than most self-inflating pads in a pack. The package includes a Schnozzel Pumpbag UL, stuff sack, and repair kit, with a 5-year warranty.
Low weight and small packed size make the Ultra 1R a natural fit for ultralight summer treks and minimalist base-weight setups, where insulation is handled elsewhere, such as layered clothing. Mouth-inflating a pure air pad isn't recommended due to moisture buildup inside the chambers, which is why the pump sack is included.
