The Therm-a-Rest Trail Scout is an entry-level self-inflating pad aimed at 3-season backpacking, built around a thinner 2.5 cm open-cell foam core. Its R-value of 3.1 (ASTM F3340-18) covers spring through autumn but falls short for genuinely cold nights, where a higher-R pad is the safer choice.
The Small size tested here has a sleep surface of just 119 × 51 cm and weighs 430 g — effectively a torso-length pad better suited as a supplemental layer, for a shorter sleeper, or for kids rather than full-body coverage for taller adults. The 75D polyester shell on both faces is tougher than the thinner fabrics found on ultralight air pads, which makes the Trail Scout a durable, budget-friendly entry point rather than a competitor to premium inflatables on weight.
The WingLock valve speeds up both inflation and deflation, useful when you're trying to pack up quickly. The trade-offs are the reduced insulation and shortened length — taller hikers or anyone heading into shoulder-season cold should look at a longer size or a pad with a higher R-value.
