The Sea to Summit 70D Nylon Tarp Poncho combines two pieces of gear into one — rain protection and an emergency shelter. The 70D nylon body with PU coating holds a 2,000 mm hydrostatic head, solid enough for sustained rain, and as a poncho it's cut generously enough to cover a loaded pack, so a separate rain cover becomes unnecessary. Converting it into tarp mode (253 × 137 cm) takes only seconds thanks to eight tie-out points. That versatility comes at a weight cost: 435 g is noticeably more than a dedicated ultralight poncho or a thin standalone tarp, so this piece makes more sense as a two-in-one solution than a pure weight-saving choice. For multi-day trips where reliability and the ability to improvise emergency cover matter, while still saving pack space and weight compared to carrying a poncho and a tarp separately, it's a practical compromise. As a sole nightly shelter it works better as a backup than a primary setup.
