Six Moon Designs Deschutes

The Six Moon Designs Deschutes is a floorless, single-person pyramid tarp shelter built from 20D silicone-coated polyester rated to 3,000 mm hydrostatic head, weighing 370 g without stakes or a trekking pole — both of which the hiker supplies separately. As a non-freestanding, trekking-pole-supported design with no floor and no mesh inner, it strips shelter weight down to the fly alone, trading enclosed protection from insects and splash-back for minimal pack weight. Pitched, it covers 4 m² of ground with a 124 cm peak height, enough headroom to sit up but not stand, and a single side-opening YKK #3 zippered door. Seams are not factory-sealed, so a user-applied sealer is required before the first trip in wet conditions — an extra step and cost easy to overlook. Guylines are included, but stakes are not, and six are typically needed to pitch it properly. This is a shelter for experienced ultralight and thru-hiking backpackers comfortable with floorless, non-freestanding pitching who want fly-only weight in exchange for accepting less complete weather and bug protection than a double-wall tent.
