Which weight counts?

Manufacturers quote up to three numbers: minimum weight (inner, fly and poles only), packed weight (adding stakes, guylines and stuff sacks) and occasionally a “trail weight” in between. This list filters on the standard weight in our catalogue — usually the packed weight. The gap between the two figures runs 200–300 g (7–11 oz), which at a 2 kg cut-off decides whether a tent makes the list at all, so check the product page for the figure the maker publishes.

The range here runs from 294 g (10.4 oz) to exactly 2,000 g, with a median around 1,120 g (2.5 lb). The list mixes 1-person to 3-person models — a 3P tent at 1.9 kg is lighter per head than a 1P shelter at 900 g, so read capacity alongside weight.

What the sub-2 kg class buys you

Below 1 kg you are looking almost exclusively at single-wall trekking-pole shelters. Between 1 and 2 kg the constructions that make camp life easier come back: freestanding domes with their own poles from roughly 850 g (median for that build sits near 1,560 g), double-wall designs whose separate inner keeps condensation off your quilt, two doors and two porches. You pay for that in grams rather than money — silnylon models in this class often cost less than half a comparable DCF tent.

Freestanding earns its keep on rock, sand and wooden platforms where stakes won't bite. If you carry poles anyway and pack consistently light, dropping under 1 kg saves roughly another 500 g (18 oz).
