The Tarptent Rainshadow 3 is a single-wall, single-hoop shelter built for 3-season backpacking, pitched with one aluminium hoop plus trekking poles rather than a full pole set. Semi-freestanding rather than fully freestanding, it still needs staking and guying to hold its shape, but the hybrid pole setup keeps total weight down to 1320 g — about 440 g per person when used at full 3-person capacity.
The fabric spec is a genuine ultralight combination: a 20D sil-poly fly and 30D double-ripstop silnylon floor, both rated to 5000 mm hydrostatic head, which is solid for sustained rain rather than just showers. Silicone-coated fabrics also mean no seam sealing is needed out of the box. Two vestibules give each occupant separate gear storage, useful given the single-wall design offers less buffer space than a double-wall tent.
It suits groups or families doing 3-season thru-hikes or backpacking trips who want to split shelter weight three ways and are comfortable with single-wall condensation trade-offs in exchange for a low overall pack weight.
