The Platypus QuickDraw is a lightweight squeeze filter using a 0.2-micron absolute hollow-fiber membrane, removing 99.9999% of bacteria and 99.9% of protozoa. Its 3 L/min flow rate is among the fastest in the squeeze-filter category, which matters on long days with frequent water stops. The cartridge is rated for about 1,000 liters and can be cleaned in the field by backflushing with the included syringe.
It screws directly onto standard 28 mm PET bottles such as Smartwater, or can be plumbed inline with a hydration bladder. At 62 g, it's one of the lighter options for ultralight backpacking and thru-hiking.
The filter does not remove viruses, chemicals, or heavy metals, so it may not be sufficient outside regions with low viral risk (typically North America and Europe). The cartridge isn't replaceable — once its lifespan is used up, the whole filter is discarded — and freezing permanently damages the membrane, so it needs to be kept close to your body or in your sleeping bag in cold conditions.
