The MSR Front Range Bug/floor insert adds what the floorless Front Range Tarp lacks on its own – a waterproof floor and mosquito netting. The lower section is 30D ripstop nylon with a PU coating rated to 3000 mm in a bathtub design, while the upper micro-mesh panel, 15D nylon, keeps insects out without blocking airflow. With its own 4 Groundhog stakes and trekking-pole compatibility, the insert can also be pitched on its own, independent of the tarp.
At 1.04 kg (880 g minimum), split across four people that's 260 g each – somewhat more than the bare tarp, which makes sense given the added mesh and waterproof floor fabric. Floor area of 4.97 m2 and a 223×223 cm footprint are noticeably smaller than the tarp's full footprint, meaning the insert sits inside the shelter with some margin rather than covering it edge to edge. It packs to 30×13 cm and ships with a stuff sack. It suits anyone who wants to upgrade a floorless tarp with insect and moisture protection short of buying a fully enclosed tent.
