Description
The Katadyn BeFree Gravity 3L is a gravity-fed water filter built around a 3-litre reservoir and a 0.1-micron hollow-fibre membrane, tested against both bacteria and protozoa. Hang the full reservoir and gravity pushes water through at up to 2 l/min, which is fast enough to fill several bottles or a pot for a group of 2–5 without anyone standing there pumping. At 192 g it is light for a group filter, and the replaceable cartridge is rated for around 1000 l before it needs swapping.
Maintenance is simple: when flow slows, shake the cartridge to dislodge trapped particles rather than backflushing with a syringe. Like other hollow-fibre filters, it does not remove viruses, so it is suited to backcountry water sources in regions without viral contamination risk rather than areas needing full-spectrum purification. A practical choice for groups sharing camp water where hands-free filling matters more than ultralight solo weight.
