How this selection is built

Every active sleeping bag or quilt qualifies when its comfort rating falls between −2 °C and 0 °C, both boundaries inclusive. Only the comfort figure is filtered on — limit and extreme ratings play no role in inclusion.

What's excluded — and why

Excluded: bags rated comfort above 0 °C (too cold for frosty nights), below −2 °C (needlessly heavy and expensive for 0 °C nights), and models without a published comfort rating. Quilts are included on purpose — they are the lightest options in this class.

Comfort, limit, extreme — which number counts

Manufacturers publish three temperatures under EN 13537/ISO 23537. Comfort describes relaxed sleep on your back; limit assumes a curled-up, cold-resistant sleeper; extreme is a survival figure. Only the comfort rating is useful for a buying decision — and that is exactly what this list filters on. A bag marketed as a "32-degree bag" via its limit often has a real comfort rating of +5 °C (41 °F) and will sleep cold at freezing.

The −2 to 0 °C band (28–32 °F) covers spring and autumn nights in the mountains and cold summer nights in Scandinavia. If you regularly sleep well below −5 °C (23 °F), you need a warmer class — and will carry the extra weight that comes with it.

Quilt or sleeping bag?

Quilts save weight by dropping the hood and back insulation — the fill squashed under your body barely insulates anyway. That only works with a warm enough pad (R-value 3–4 and up) and well-sealed edges; draft-sensitive sleepers are better served by a classic mummy cut. Cold sleepers should generally aim one class warmer.
