An R-value of 4 insulates well enough for frosty nights and most winter use — as a rule of thumb, down to roughly −10 °C (14 °F) ground cold. If you mostly hike spring to autumn, R 4+ means carrying weight and money you don't need.

How this selection is built
Every active pad from the inflatable and foam pad categories qualifies when its manufacturer R-value is at least 4.0 (4.0 counts). The filter runs on canonical catalogue values — we convert nothing and estimate nothing.
What's excluded — and why
Excluded: pads without a published R-value (older models predating the ASTM standard often state only temperature ranges) and pads below R 4.0. A missing value doesn't mean a pad insulates poorly — only that we can't rank it honestly.
What the R-value actually tells you
The R-value measures a pad's resistance to heat loss into the ground — since 2020 under the unified ASTM F3340 standard, which makes values comparable across brands. It is the single most important number on a sleeping pad: a warm sleeping bag helps little when the cold comes from below, because insulation compressed under your body barely works.
As a guide: R 1–2 covers summer nights, R 3–4 covers three seasons, R 4 and up handles frost and snow, and R 5–6 is true winter territory. This list starts at 4.0 — the threshold where a pad works year-round.
The cheapest route to more warmth: stacking
R-values add up. A simple foam pad (R ≈ 2) under an inflatable pad (R ≈ 3) gives you roughly R 5 — often lighter and considerably cheaper than a single winter pad, with the foam doubling as a puncture backup. If you already own a three-season pad, do that maths before buying new.
Cold sleepers should size up one step; on modern pads the weight penalty is small.
