Freestanding Ultralight Tents

Includes tents with a fully freestanding construction and a catalogue weight up to and including 2,000 g (4.4 lb) — semi-freestanding models are not part of this list.

65 models prices for 37 manually verified data as of 09/2026

Fully freestanding means the tent stands on its own poles without a single peg — the decisive advantage on rock slabs, wooden platforms, gravel and sand, and it lets you lift the pitched tent and move it. If you almost always camp on grass or forest floor, you pay for those poles in weight: the lightest tent here is 852 g (30 oz), while trekking-pole shelters start several hundred grams below that.

How this selection is built

Every active tent qualifies when the catalogue records its construction as fully freestanding and its catalogue weight is at most 2,000 g (2,000 g counts). We use the weight the manufacturer lists as its standard figure — usually packed weight with stakes and stuff sacks.

What's excluded — and why

Excluded: semi-freestanding tents (the foot end or the vestibule has to be staked out — on rock or a platform such a tent will not stand on its own), trekking-pole shelters and tarps without poles of their own, and anything over 2,000 g, even at 2,005 g. Models with no recorded construction type do not appear — we don't infer the design from a product name.

What “fully freestanding” means

A fully freestanding tent holds itself up: inner and pole structure stand without a single peg. That counts wherever pegs have nothing to bite into — rock slabs, the wooden platforms on long-distance trails, gravel, sand, hard baked ground. In practice it also means you can pitch it, lift the whole thing, set it down two metres away, and shake the inner out in the morning.

Semi-freestanding models are deliberately left out. They only stand once the foot end or the vestibule is staked, so on a platform or a slab they fail in exactly the situation you wanted freestanding for. One caveat applies to both designs: freestanding is not storm-proof. As soon as the wind picks up, corners and guylines need pegs, rocks or sand bags — otherwise the tent turns into a kite.

What freestanding costs

Carrying your own poles has a price: nothing in this list starts below roughly 850 g. The lightest is the Zpacks Free Duo at 852 g (30 oz), DCF with carbon poles, followed by the Free Trio at 982 g and the Big Agnes Tiger Wall Platinum 2 at 1,021 g; the median sits near 1,560 g (3.4 lb). Trekking-pole shelters undercut all of that, but they need pegs and ground that holds them.

The 2,000 g (4.4 lb) cut-off keeps this list in the ultralight and lightweight classes; classic three-season domes are more often 2.5–3 kg. The list mixes 1-, 2- and 3-person models — capacity is on each product page, and a 3P tent at 1,900 g is lighter per person than a 1P at 1,200 g.
